Welcome to The Grey's Inn
We're a traditional Northumbrian family-owned pub, nestled in the picturesque village of Embleton. Just 800 yards from the renowned coastal walk between Low Newton-by-the-Sea and Craster, the inn sits above the sweeping sands of Embleton Bay, overlooked by the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. Inside, you’ll find period charm with three roaring fires and a cosy, welcoming atmosphere year-round. Outside, relax on the village green or discover the two-tiered, south-facing beer garden, complete with mature apple trees, nesting birds, and the much-talked-about Potting Shed — a private dining space with its own log-burning stove. From the elevated balcony, enjoy views across Embleton’s gardens towards the Norman church of Holy Trinity. Family- and dog-friendly, The Greys is known for its warm hospitality, traditional table games, and creative touches for children. Sport is shown on request across three screens, but the focus remains on community: quiz nights, local stories, and a friendly welcome for visitors and neighbours alike.
Dining at The Greys
Just enjoyed Sunday Lunch - oh my word, absolutely loved it!
Wonderful, traditional British pub. No concession to modernity, just everything you want from a pub - a warm welcome, good, no frills food, great beer and an open fire. Some activities for children and a dartboard, too. Everyone should have a pub like this near them!

Step Into Our History...
We are proud that The Greys Inn has been part of the area since the Mid 1800s, remaining family and locally run Free House throughout the duration of that time.
The Inn carries the name of the esteemed Grey Family, whose seat is at Howick Hall ( just over 4 miles away) and whose best known family member is probably Sir Charles Edward (Earl) Grey, who as Prime Minister (1830-1834) became renowned for overseeing the abolition of slavery in the then British Empire.
His name is perhaps best recognised today on one of the most popular blends of the tea in the world, namely “Earl Grey”, his own unique blend of black teas flavoured with oil of bergamot orange.
The pub remains a traditional Northumbrian Inn of character; compact and particularly cosy in the cooler months with its popular open fires.

Our Story Today
The Greys Inn is situated in the quiet and pleasant village of Embleton, and just 800 yds from the renowned coastal walk between Low Newton-by-the-Sea (the Ship Inn) and Craster (The Jolly Fisherman). Embleton bay is one of the most beautiful and tranquil stretches of beach in the country commanded over by the iconic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. Embleton itself is part located within Northumberland’s Area of Outstanding Natural beauty, one of 46 areas around the country now known as Natural Landscapes, and is on the Northumberland Coastal Route. It is thus additionally within easy striking distance of the coastal attractions of Bamburgh, Seahouses, Beadnell and The Holy Island of Lindisfarne (home to the famous Lindisfarne Mead and the iconic Lindisfarne Castle)and further inland to Wooler, Kielder, Harian’s Wall and even the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne itself, and Greys Street and Greys monument.

The Greys has seating on the green to its frontage and a charming, hidden, and off road two tiered garden to its rear, south facing and sheltered; stone walls, mature foliage apple trees and nesting birds characterise is country feel. Within the beer garden is its much talked about ‘Potting Shed’, a sensitive conversion of a former horticultural outbuilding to an outside dining facility ( for up to a dozen people). Private and atmospheric, it enjoys its own log burning stove and is ideal for family get togethers or more private gatherings.
The outlook to the rear of the Greys is "the hidden gem" of the village. It overlooks some of the oldest parts of Embleton’s mature gardens out towards playing fields and the Norman church of The Holy Trinity. These can be particularly enjoyed from the higher elevation of the pub’s outside balcony to the rear, which at dining room level also overlooks the Inn’s beer garden.
The beer garden can be accessed either through the pub itself or via "Kippleberry Steps" to its side.
The Inn is family and dog friendly. The tradition of table games and providing for children's creativity remains strong despite phone and laptop internet access. The Greys subscribes to all main satellite TV channel's ( SKY, TNT & Amazon Prime) for the showing of requested sport only. Three different screens cater for personal sporting choice when occasion arises.
The Inn itself is dedicated to provide a friendly, value for money welcoming service where customers from the local community, regular seasonal visitors and those simply passing through the wonderful county of Northumberland can relax, find respite, uncover interesting stories and make new friends. We remain at the heart of a community, which also enjoys a super Farm shop, a great garage, a lovely church, a cracking school and highly thought of Hotel. One of the key fund-raising missions for our monthly Thursday Quiz nights is support of the Embeton Children’s Play Park; a wonderful village facility to help to maintain.
The Greys, through family connections, has close links with The Alnwick Brewery, located at Hawkhill on the coastal road out of Alnwick towards Alnmouth and Amble. The Brewery is also the Inn’s closest supplier of quality ales and recent quality awards endorse the pubs rotating chosen selection, which also includes other established regional brews. The brewery is also noted for the rustic setting of its Tap room, bottle shop and beer garden. The closest distillery to the Inn is at Rock (3 miles away) home to the Northumberland Spirit Company and notably its Alnwick Gin. The regionally famous Alnwick Rum (since 1914) is widely available and notably from Alnwick Rum’s own retail outlet “A Taste of Northumbria” in Alnwick town’s Market Square.
The Greys Inn is full of character and characters, it is traditional, welcoming, and well connected - somewhere to enjoy good food and drink, and relax.
